Mathematics

To help the boys earn their belt loop or
pin, we have accommodated our exhibits
and activities to meet the following
requirements:

Belt Loop
  • Keep a record of the money you
    earn and spend for 3 weeks.  
    Must be completed at home prior
    to your visit
  • Complete five activities at the
    Math Center
  • Measure five items with both
    metric and nonmetric measures.  
    Report on history of the metric
    system

Pin
Geometry:
  • Find 12 items, classify, and label
    them by their shape or outline
Calculating:
  • Learn how to use an abacus or
    Napier’s Bones
  • Shop at the exhibit Shop Till You
    Drop following the directions at
    the exhibit
Statistics:
  • Explore the Math Center and
    explain the meaning of statistical
    words
  • Conduct an opinion survey
Probability:
  • Go to Pascal’s Triangle and
    perform a coin toss experiment
  • Sneaker probability activity
Measuring:
  • Estimate and measure how tall
    someone is

The Academic Pin offers 3-4 selections
in 5 areas.  The boys need to complete
a activity in each area and have
earned the Belt Loop to earn the
Academic Pin.  We have not listed all
activities to earn the Academic Pin.  
We have listed only the activities that
can be completed at the Math Center.

Chess

To help the boys earn their belt loop or
pin, we have accommodated our exhibits
and activities to meet the following
requirements:

Belt Loop
  • Identify pieces
  • Demonstrate how pieces move
  • Play a game of chess

Pin
  • Demonstrate basic opening
    principles
  • Participate in a pack/den chess
    tournament
  • Solve a prespecified chess problem
  • Read about a famous chess player
  • Describe the US Chess Federation
    ratings
  • Learn chess notation.  Play and
    record a game with another scout

The Academic Pin offers a selection of
10 activities.  The boys need to complete
5 of 10 activities and have earned the
Belt Loop to earn the Academic Pin.  We
have not listed all activities to earn the
Academic Pin.  We have listed only the
activities that can be completed at the
Math Center.
Offering opportunities for Cub
Scouts to earn Belt Loops and
Pins.  We have accommodated
our exhibit and activities to
meet the listed requirements
for each Belt Loop and/or
Academic Pin.
